The Corolla 2018 will be available in six versions: GLi 1.8 with six-speed manual transmission; GLi 1.8 and GLi 1.8 Upper with Multi-Drive automatic transmission, which reproduces seven speeds in the Drive and sequential modes, through changes in the transmission lever; XEI, XRS and Altis, all with a 2.0-liter engine and equipped with the same Multi-Drive automatic transmission, increased with the possibility of manual gear shifts in the sequential mode, both on the gear lever and through butterflies located behind the steering wheel. With sales starting today, the new Corolla will continue to write its track record of global success, which completes five decades this year. In Brazil, its history began in the early 1990s, when the model came through imports. Since 1998, the sedan has been produced at the Toyota plant in Indaiatuba (SP). Corolla has led its segment in 10 of the last 13 years and currently has approximately 44% market share.

Renewed Design

The new design of the Corolla ensures a more remarkable presence to the sedan. The changes focus primarily on the front with a restyled and sharper set of headlights and grille, which integrate even more consistently, highlighting Toyota’s Keen Look design concept, inspired by the focused look of a high-performance athlete , before the competition. The corners of the bumper have gained deep creases, conveying a greater sense of tridimensionality and modernity to the vehicle, and more elongated appearance, providing more robustness as it is preserved by chevrolet camaro covers. The Corolla 2018’s front-end assembly features halogen headlights in the GLi and XEi versions, and LEDs with automatic leveling in the XRS and Altis versions. Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) are available from the XEi version, and all feature front-facing flashlights with LED positioning light. In the rear, the changes focus mainly on the lanterns, which are now LEDs across the line and with a new arrangement of lights. The fact that the rear, brake and fog lights are at the bottom, together with the finest chrome bar, imparts a sense of breadth and fluidity. Add to this news, the back and arrow lights in a darker tone, giving a more classy touch to the model. On the side, it is possible to notice a higher and uniform waist line, increasing the elegance of the sedan. As of the XEi version, the Corolla also gained a shark fin antenna (shark fin) and 17-inch alloy wheels. The XRS version arrives with a number of items that evoke its dynamic character, such as rear aerofoil, sports skirts (front, side and rear), chrome exhaust tip and the exclusive XRS emblem in the lower right corner of the boot lid.

Internal Finish

The interior of the Corolla 2018 continues to unite comfort, sophistication and functionality. In all versions, the panel keeps the theme horizontal, extending the feeling of space to the occupants. The information zones (instruments) and operation (Audio / Multimedia and air-conditioning controls) are intuitively positioned. From the GLi entry version, the finish is exquisite, with black leather lined parts such as the steering wheel and details of the transmission handle, and gray on the front and rear seats. GLi Upper and XEi versions have gray leather trim; the XRS, in exclusive leather in black color; and top of the line Altis, in the new light linen color. From the XEi, all have a chrome finish in the diffusers of the air conditioning, which have gained a rounded shape. In addition to these items, the parking brake lever knob and the four door Doors of the Corolla Altis are also chrome plated. The two types of instrument panel available on Corolla have received graphic changes. In the GLi version, the information zone is composed of a large central circle which indicates the speed, flanked by two smaller ones: left-hand turns, and fuel and temperature indicator on the right. A liquid crystal display, located below the speed dial, gathers information from the on-board computer. In the operating area of the Corolla GLi, the air-conditioning controls are manual, and there is a modern sound system, with Bluetooth connection and auxiliary inputs such as USB, iPod and the like. In the XEi, XRS and Altis versions, the dashboard shows two large circles at its ends: the left one gathers the spigot and the engine thermometer; the right, the speedometer and the fuel gauge. In the center, a now-colored 4.2-inch TFT screen displays a wealth of three-dimensional projection information. The operating area of the XEi, XRS and Altis models is also new. The Toyota Play multimedia system has won a 7.0-inch touch-screen LCD. Another item that conveys a sense of exclusivity is clear blue lighting, common to all versions, for speed and engine speed indicators on the dashboard, audio system, clock and air conditioning when the headlight is on. The light intensity can be adjusted according to the driver’s preference.

Comfort

The most attractive features of Corolla are its constructive quality and excellent handling, which have been improved on the 2018 line. The main novelty is the adoption of the 17-inch wheels (from the XEi version), providing greater stability to the vehicle. To ensure the high level of comfort characteristic of the model, Toyota engineers developed a new calibration of the front and rear shock absorbers and raised the suspension by 5mm so that balance between comfort and stability was maintained. With the change in suspension, the software of the electric steering control module was also recalibrated. Another point studied by engineering was the improvement of acoustics. Some changes, such as the addition of a layer of rubber to the paneling of the fire panel and placement of felts on the door panels, have contributed to the reduction of noise level in the cabin, increasing comfort.

Motor and Transmission

The Corolla 2018 maintains the two current engine types: 1.8 Flexfuel, Dual VVT-i DOHC 16-valve, which yields 144 hp at 6,000 rpm when fueled with ethanol, and 139 hp at 6,000 rpm with gasoline. The maximum torque in this configuration is 183 Nm (with ethanol) and 174 Nm (with gasoline), always at 4,800 rpm. 2.0 Flexfuel, Dual VVT-i DOHC 16-valve, which yields 154 hp at 5,800 rpm when fueled with ethanol, and 143 hp at 5,800 rpm with gasoline. The maximum torque in this configuration is 203 Nm at 4,800 revolutions (with ethanol) and 190 Nm at 4,000 revolutions (with gasoline). Both engines are built with block and aluminum head, and offer the perfect combination of performance, durability and ease of repair. The transmissions that equip the line 2018 are the already known, six-speed manual for the entry version GLi, and the enshrined automatic Multi-Drive, available in the other versions. The Multi-Drive transmission is derived from CVT technology, and was adopted to meet the Brazilian consumer, who privileges performance, without giving up comfort and low fuel consumption. Its differential is management software, which reproduces seven gears, even when the driver drives the vehicle with the gearbox in the Drive position. The Toyota Multi-Drive transmission offers, in all versions, the possibility of sequential manual changes. On the GLi, exclusively on the gear lever. In XEi, XRS and Altis versions, sequential changes can also be made through the butterflies located behind the wheel. These three versions of the sedan feature the ‘Sport Mode’ key which, when triggered, changes the mapping of the transmission management software and gives Corolla a more sporty dynamic behavior. The safety issue was one of the most received attention from Toyota engineers. All versions of the Corolla 2018 feature Electronic Stability Control (VSC), Electronic Traction Control (TRC) and Lift Assist (HAC). In addition, the two curtain-type airbags, formerly available only on the Altis, have become standard items for the entire range. Pre-tensioner and force limiter; ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution; emergency automatic braking light; automatic ignition of the headlamps, in the XEi, XRS and Altis versions; and rain sensor at Altis.

Cost of ownership and customer satisfaction

One of the formulas of Corolla’s success is its low cost of ownership, calculated on the basis of car price, low depreciation rate, which makes its resale value very competitive, low cost of reviews, and excellent economy level of fuel. All of this, combined with the high Toyota standard of Quality, Durability and Reliability, contributes to the success of sales and guarantees the high level of satisfaction and loyalty among the owners of the model. Up to 60,000 km, the total cost with revisions of Corolla 2018 is about R $ 3,250, one of the most competitive in the market.

Accessories

Among the new features are safety features such as the front parking sensor and ultrasonic alarm; which emphasize sportiness, such as white light for headlights and LED lights for fog lights; such as a digital video recorder. All accessories, new and current, harmonize with the design lines of the car and ensure even more comfort and practicality. The original Toyota accessory line offers 12 months warranty and full coverage of the dealership network.

Toyota Cycle

The entire Corolla line can be purchased by the Toyota Cycle, a strategy that offers special conditions when buying a zero-kilometer vehicle. The modality of business aims to create exclusive benefits for the consumer, through a lasting relationship with the brand. The Toyota Cycle purchase has three stages. The first one refers to the entry, which must be at least 30% of the total value of the model, varying according to the chosen configuration, in any version of the Corolla line. In the second stage, the customer installs part of the value between 12 and 36 months. The values of the plots are also reduced, and are up to 40% lower than those practiced in the market. At the end, there will remain a residual portion, which may not exceed 50% of the total price of the vehicle. The customer will not have to pay any amount to pay off the residual, since Toyota guarantees the repurchase of the vehicle by the concessionaire for at least 85% of the FIPE table. In this way, the amount paid in the repurchase removes the residual portion and also contributes to the entry of a new one, thus restarting the Toyota Cycle. In October 1966, a time when demand for passenger cars began to rise in Japan, Toyota launched the first generation of the Corolla mid-size sedan, equipped with a 1.0-liter engine and five seats. Over the last 50 years, consumers from all over the world share the same affection for the model. That’s why Toyota’s development team has been constantly working to exceed customer expectations. Currently, 13 countries produce the average sedan, which has already reached the mark of more than 1.3 million units sold annually, in about 150 countries. Since its inception, Corolla has added more than 44 million licensed units worldwide, which makes it the best-selling vehicle of all time. In Brazil, the first Corolla landed in 1994, with the opening of the market for imports. With the growing interest of Brazilian consumers in the Toyota sedan, highlighted by the international recognition and repercussion of the model around the world, the automaker began its production in national territory in 1998 at the plant in Indaiatuba (SP), specially installed to manufacture the first versions of the national Corolla, which was already in its eighth generation From that time to the present day, the mid-size sedan has become one of the most successful vehicles in its segment in Brazil. Last year, for example, the model accounted for 48% of total sales in the category, with 64,737 units sold.
